Maharajas of Parla Khemundi was known as a modern visionary during their respective periods. From the period of Goura Chandra Gajapati Narayan Deba, this Estate has laid foundation stone for modern education. He dug tanks for irrigation and drinking water purposes. The English administrators in latter part have named this area as the city of tanks. Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati is always remembered for his populist actions and dignity. He has a good relation with British rulers. Maximum of the Estate buildings were erected during his period. Now these are being used by the district administration as office and school buildings. You can have a glimpse of the then architectures if you ever visit the Collectorate of Parlakhemundi, The Maharaja College, The Maharaja School, The Girl’s school etc.
Maharaja Gaurachandra Gajapati was keen on communication measures for his state. So he introduced railways in his state in the name of Parla khemundi light railways. In 1928, 1sttrain run in between Nuapara to Parla khemundi. Still the practice is going on. The buildings, Counters build during Estate time are still tendering the same services in Parla khemundi Rail station. Though the old trains are withdrawn but it still murmurs the foresightness of the Parla Maharajas in the proud land.
